Maye and veteran Jacoby Brissett are locks for the Week 1 roster, making it a three-way fight for the No. 3 job between Zappe, Milton and Nathan Rourke. Zappe would fetch the biggest return in a trade, especially if the Patriots wait until the summer when other QBs begin getting injured in training camp. If Milton isn't a complete disaster in spring practices and Rourke performs at a replacement level, Zappe could be out of town by Sept. 1. The 25-year-old Zappe appeared in 10 games (six starts) for New England in 2023 in his second season and threw for 1,272 yards, six touchdowns and nine interceptions.

He had one of the best games of his career, leading the underdog Patriots to just their third victory of 2023 (and their first since Week 7). This performance is all the more impressive when you consider that Zappe didn't have key offensive playmakers Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle), Demario Douglas (concussion), and DeVante Parker (knee) at his disposal. The Patriots will draw a tough matchup against the Chiefs in Week 15, but Zappe could remain on the fantasy radar as a low-end QB2 if New England falls behind early and has to pass a lot.

Demario Douglas (concussion) and Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle) have already been ruled out, which is bad news for the passing game and the offense as a whole. Fantasy managers should avoid Zappe at all costs ahead of a game that is expected to be very low-scoring.

When asked if he knows who is starting at quarterback for the Week 14 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night, New England Patriots signal-caller Bailey Zappe said, "Coach (Belichick) has made it pretty clear, but I'll let him announce it to everybody." Belichick usually doesn't divulge his game plans without having his arm twisted, so we may not get an official announcement from the team. But even though Zappe was unable to put any points on the board in his first start of 2023 in the Week 13 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, it looks like he's going to get another chance to lead the offense on a short week. Not only is Zappe a desperation low-end QB2, at best, in two-QB fantasy leagues, but the Patriots' offense is extremely beat up and will be without lead back Rhamondre Stevenson (ankle).

The Athletic's Jeff Howe says that it should be Zappe's job in Week 13 if all goes as expected. Zappe was seen taking first-team repetitions at practice on Wednesday with rookie Malik Cunningham, and not Mac Jones, working as his backup. This move had been coming for a while, with the 24-year-old Zappe having already replaced Jones mid-game on a couple of occasions, including each of the last two games. There's no guarantee Zappe will be all that much of an improvement over Jones, but at this point, the Patriots are just looking for some kind of spark on the offensive side of the ball.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss didn't see Mac Jones throw during the media-access period. The Patriots went with Jones again as their starter coming off their bye in the Week 12 loss to the New York Giants, but he only made it the first half before throwing a few more interceptions and being benched yet again in favor of Zappe. Zappe led the team on a touchdown drive but also threw a pick for the second straight game in the 10-7 loss. Head coach Bill Belichick probably isn't going to make any formal announcements on the QB situation anytime soon, but from Wednesday's practice observations, it appears as though Zappe may get his first start of 2023 this Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Assuming Jones is done for the day, which is likely the case, he'll finish with 150 yards and two picks off 12-for-21 passing. But the real story will be who the team's starter will be for the Week 5 meeting with New Orleans. Of course, whether is Jones or Zappe under center, neither can be trusted from a fantasy standpoint.
